Donate Your Mac

To begin, you must completely erase your Mac. Follow the instructions below in order to do this:

  • Sign out of Apple Account

    • Open Music (or iTunes), click Account in menu bar > Authorizations > Deauthorize this Computer. Enter your email and password.
    • Next, click Account > Sign Out. Close Music (or iTunes)
    • Note, if your cannot deauthorize or sign out, repeat these steps using the Podcasts app.
    • Open Messages. Go to Messages in the menu bar > Preferences. Choose Account, click Sign Out.
    • Open FaceTime. Go to FaceTime in the menu bar > Preferences. Click Sign Out.
    • Open the App Store. Click Account > Sign Out.
    • Open System Setting. Go to Apple Account (Apple ID) > Overview > Sign Out. Enter your Apple Account Password.
    • On old machines, go to System Preferences > iCloud > Sign Out.
    • Lastly, in System Settings, go to Bluetooth and remove all devices (unless you are donating an iMac).

  • Boot into RecoveryOS

    • If you have any sensitive data on your Mac, make a backup now (you can use Time Machine or manually copy files).
    • After backup (if needed), shut down your Mac by clicking the Apple Logo > Shut Down. Click Shut Down.
    • After shut down, press three keys on your keyboard: Option + Command + R
    • Press the power button on your Mac.
    • Continue to hold the three keys until you see a spinning globe.
    • Click on Choose Network, and connect to the internet. The system will boot into Recovery HD.
    • If you do not see a spinning globe, try again but only press Command + R. This will boot into the System RecoverOS.
    • If your Mac still boots normally, shut it down by pressing and holding the power button.
    • After shutting down, press and hold the power button. Keep holding until it shows Loading startup options...
    • Choose Options, and click Continue.

  • Erase your Mac

    • Once inside RecoveryOS, you may see a message Select a user you know the password for:
    • If this occurs, click Recovery Assistant in the menu bar > Erase Mac.
    • Click on the link Erase Mac...
    • The Mac will reboot, and then you can shut it down.
    • If you do not see this message, then choose Disk Utility, and click Continue.
    • In the sidebar, click the uppermost drive. This is usually labeled Macintosh HD.
    • Click Erase in the toolbar.
    • Click erase and wait until finished.
    • Click Done when finished, and then shut down your Mac.

Provide Accessories if Possible

If possible, please provide accessories for your Mac. (i.e. Charger for MacBook - Mouse and Keyboard for iMac) Rebuilt Macs cannot use your Mac without these accessories. If you cannot provide these accessories, you can still donate, but your Mac may only be used as spare parts. So, please provide all accessories alongside the Mac.
